A Great Logo

A logo does more than just represent a company, product, or service. A logo should give your audience an emotional response, create a desire, and give a sense of community among your customers.

Think about how Disney creates an emotional response, or Haagen-Daz creates a desire. Then think about how the best logos in the world give a sense of being a part of a community such as BMW, Harley Davidson, Apple, and Nike. Your logo is the most important piece of your corporate branding program. It is a reflection of your organizations culture, it's goals, as well as the values and aspirations of your customers. In the end your logo stands for everything your company must represent to your world of customers.

What makes a great logo you may ask. The best logos share three important qualities. First they communicate an idea, principle, or mood to the world. Customers recognize the logo as a symbol for everything your company has done and everything you represent. One way to test this is to think of the best brands in the world and what they mean to you. Can you picture the logo without seeing it? You can and that is why the logo works. It brings to mind everything the company wants you to think about without the product actually being there.

Second great logos are practical. They work in all different sizes, full color and black and white. They work in advertising, store displays, packaging, on billboards, and so on. They are simple, clean, and used consistantly.

Last, all great logos share aesthetic. Some cleverly play on a company name, or present elements in a visual way that is interesting and timeless.
